It’s the elephant in the room

Brief: The objective of the campaign was to encourage open conversations around suicide and to support people who may be worried about someone else.

Working closely with the Suicide Prevention Team and Public Health Birmingham, I developed and presented a series of concept ideas. This concept was selected for rollout and designed to run in phases, appearing across digital screens throughout the city and on Public Health social media channels.

The campaign targeted a range of audiences, including local universities, using clear, supportive messaging to prompt awareness, discussion and action.

Concept stage – It’s the elephant in the room

Once the concept was chosen, I explored how the “elephant in the room” could exist across different everyday social situations — sometimes showing only parts of the elephant to reflect what goes unspoken. The visual approach was deliberately literal, designed to capture attention and encourage the audience to pause, read, and reflect.

The final concept depicted two people sitting on a sofa in conversation, with the elephant present in the background — a simple but powerful metaphor for difficult topics that are often visible yet avoided
